Research

Hi All,

Last night I had the opportunity to train Jodi whom is a 2nd degree from Toowoomba. After some basic fitness, padwork  we started to look at kata applications and understandings and Jodi asked if I would email some of my research books I have used. I have listed them below and here is a little spiel about how and why I started this research.

Over the past few years I have ramped up my research habits. This was intially started by Kyoshi Steve Nedelkos saying “You know we do a speech for our 1st degree on our journey so far, an essay for 3rd degree on the martial arts, wouldn’t it be good if we did a thesis for 5th degree on a specific topic. I also joined Patrick McCarthy’s research group for a year which helped me greatly.bubushi-mccarthy

This led me on a path that has changed my perception of the martial arts and in particular kata. I have listed below the main books I think everyone should read to start their own research journey.

  • Tales of Okinawa’s Great Masters (Shoshin Nagamine, translated by Patrick McCarthy) – nice read about various masters good background information.
  • Okinawan Karate – Teachers, styles and secret techniques (Mark Bishop) – masters and lineages which will make a big impact on your understanding of the various kata as your research deepens.
  • The Bible of karate Bubishi (translated by Patrick McCarthy) – Awesome no other word can explain it.
  • Seienchin Kata – the Book – can be purchased online here http://www.downloadkarate.com/index.asp?Sec_ID=353
  • Have Fun
