March Black Belt Training

Following the March grading was the first of our black belt classes for 2009.

I started the class with some traditional combination drills aimed at improving kakie uke, deflection and parrying concepts as well as arm conditioning.

We looked specifically at Sanchin’s breathing patterns and stances including testing procedures. Following on I explained further explanation regarding Tensho’s kakie uke movement and possible applications thereof which led us into discovering levels of kata understanding.

We then moved onto katas Iron Horse, Seinchin and Saifa. The aim was not to put down previous concepts regarding bunkai (applications) but to explain the various levels that can be found within kata.

These levels stretch from basic concepts through to advanced kyusho and grappling applications.

The main aim of this class was to provide information for future dan gradings. I did this by challenging pre-conceived ideas regarding kata applications and to offer levels of applications. Those that take their karate seriously will undoubtly see the benefit of not only performing kata repeatedly but to also start on their journey of research into kata to challenge and test their ideas.

I look forward to more thought provoking discussions at the next black belt class.
